Stanford Summer Insititutes
Hello I have just finished up the Topics of Bioscience presented by Stanford-Pre Collegiate Summer Institutes. In the course I was taught the Central Dogma, Viruses and Antivirals, Vaccines and the Immune System, Data Analysis and the Scientific Method, Physiology, and Ethical and Societal Implications of Biomedical Research. While learning about this we applied this using Sars-CoV-2 and the Covid-19 outbreak. When beginning this course I knew some level of information such as the central dogma but as I went throughout the course I was exposed to topics and ideas that I had no idea such as how to conduct clinical trials, different types of vaccines, and more. All of this was very interesting as I did not know about these things such as there are 4 phases for clinical trials where the first phase is a limited amount of people and then it scales up from there and then the FDA approves it and then go to production. Another topic I did not know about was the different type of vaccines such as Inactivated, Live Attenuated, Subunit, mRNA, and etc. For example the Covid -19 vaccine was a mRNA vaccine in which you be injected with the mRNA and then would be fused with the cell membrane to travel in. Then, the instructions of the mRNA are read in which then the protein is created while the the mRNA that has been transcripted would be broken down. After this the target protein is made and travels to surface and causes a immune response, and the cell creates a target protein so it learn it so in the future if the infection comes .Also the instructor, Dr. David Armenta was a nice teacher to be with. He was very patient when answering our questions and as he went through with the course material he explained every detail which was helpful for notes. So overall this course was a great experience because not only you get access to the material there are also Student Life activities such as a Virtual cafe, Guest Speakers from Various Professions, and even how to setup College Applications. I would recommend this course to people interested in biology and medical field as the topics revolve it.
